The Board Room for the Future
The board room for the future must be a place designed to improve the health and well-being for its participants. It should also be a place that encourages the use of digital technologies for more efficient and effective meetings.
Furniture for meeting rooms, for instance, must be able to accommodate many people to participate in the same conference without compromising privacy or efficiency. The space must be equipped with the latest audio design and a top-quality sound system that ensures those in person and on the internet can be heard clearly. Natural light is needed to minimize eye strain during meetings. According to an Harvard Business Review survey, natural lighting is the most desired office perk. It’s a step above regular and predictable options, like cafeterias and fitness centers.
Other technological innovations that can be useful in the boardroom include real-time analytics, “living” management information using the concepts of infographics and dashboards a step further and crowdsourcing technology which can provide an external perspective from stakeholders. These tools can help the board better assess risks and create an additional basis for making decisions.
In the future the boardroom will need to include more sustainability experts. Board members must be aware of the impacts business activities have on the environment as well as climate change, biodiversity as well as human rights. It could also mean including new skills like the ability to assess the impact of ESG issues on the long-term financial results.
